Why We Sing Over Our Children Before Bed (And Why We’ll Keep Doing It)

Bedtime has always felt sacred to me.

Not because it’s perfectly peaceful.

Not because our children never stall, ask for another drink of water, or suddenly remember an urgent question they forgot to ask all day.

But because bedtime creates a natural pause.

The day slows down.

The noise settles.

And for a few moments, our family has an opportunity to end the day focused on what matters most.

One of the simplest ways we’ve done that is through singing.

Not because we’re trying to create a perfect spiritual experience every night.

But because worship has become one of the most natural ways we point our children toward Jesus before they fall asleep.

Children Remember More Than We Realize

Long before children can explain theology, they are absorbing rhythms.

They remember songs.

They remember routines.

They remember what fills their homes.

One of the reasons I love singing at bedtime is because songs often stay with children far longer than lectures do.

Truth wrapped in melody has a way of lingering.

Even years later.

The Songs Our Children Know By Heart

One of my favorite moments as a mom is hearing my children randomly sing worship songs throughout the day.

Sometimes they’re singing while they play.

Sometimes while they’re getting dressed.

Sometimes during hard emotional moments.

And every time I hear it, I’m reminded that the songs we sing over our children are becoming part of the soundtrack of their childhood.

Long before they fully understand every lyric, those truths are already taking root.

Why We Sing Before Bed

For our family, singing before bed serves several purposes.

💛 It Slows Everyone Down

Worship naturally shifts the atmosphere.

💛 It Reinforces Truth

Children hear Scripture and biblical truth repeatedly.

💛 It Creates Emotional Safety

Predictable bedtime rhythms help children feel secure.

💛 It Ends the Day Focused on Jesus

No matter what kind of day we’ve had.

Music Shapes Faith Before Children Can Explain It

One of the beautiful things about worship music is that it helps form faith before children can fully articulate it.

The words become familiar.

The truths become normal.

The presence of God becomes something they learn to recognize.

That’s why I believe music is one of the most powerful discipleship tools available to parents.

What I Hope My Children Remember

When my children eventually look back on their childhood, I don’t expect them to remember every bedtime routine perfectly.

But I hope they remember a home where worship was normal.

A home where Jesus was part of everyday life.

A home where they were prayed over, blessed, and reminded of God’s love before they went to sleep.

More than perfect behavior.

More than perfect routines.

That’s what I hope stays with them.

A Little Bit Deeper…

One of my honest prayers for my children, especially when they’re young, is that they would always carry a memory of being knit together in the womb.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

I pray that they retain a smell, a sound, a memory of being that near to Jesus. It will be the closest they are to Him until we go to heaven, so I pray for that reality to stick as a memory, whatever it looks like.

💛 Try This Tonight

If bedtime has felt rushed lately, try this simple rhythm:

  1. Read one short Bible story.

  2. Pray together.

  3. Sing one worship song.

  4. Speak a blessing over your child.

That’s it.

Don’t overcomplicate it.

Simple and consistent matters far more than elaborate and occasional.

A Little Bit Deeper…

One of the things I’ve done with each of my children since they were babies is ask the Lord for a song to sing over them—a song that would become part of the soundtrack of their childhood long before they fully understood the words.

For my son, that song has been Always Forever by Phil Wickham. I have videos of us singing it together when he was two years old, before he really understood what he was singing. Even now, when I hear those lyrics, I find myself praying they would become true in his life—that he would genuinely love Jesus and choose to follow Him wholeheartedly.

For my daughter, it’s Champion by Bethel Music. It melts me every time I hear her sing, “You are my Champion, giants fall when You stand undefeated,” usually with her own adorable toddler version of the lyrics mixed in. But behind the sweetness of those moments is something deeper. I want her to grow up knowing who God is—that He is strong, faithful, victorious, and present in every circumstance.

The earlier we can teach, model, and point our children toward these truths, the stronger foundation we’re helping build. Long before they fully understand theology, they’re forming a picture of God’s character. My prayer is that when harder seasons come, these truths won’t feel unfamiliar. They’ll feel like home.

The Goal Isn’t a Perfect Bedtime Routine

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal isn’t checking spiritual boxes.

The goal is creating small, consistent rhythms that point our children toward Jesus.

Night after night.

Year after year.

Because those ordinary moments often become the moments that shape hearts.

FINAL ENCOURAGEMENT

One of the deepest desires in my heart as a mother and worship leader is that my children would see worship happening far more in our home than they ever do from a stage.

And sometimes that worship looks as simple as a sleepy child, a quiet room, and a familiar song sung softly before bed.

Those moments may feel small.

But I believe they matter more than we realize.

Keep running momma.

xoxo,

Alex
