How to Choose Worship Songs That Teach Your Children Biblical Truth

When my children were born, I didn’t just want songs that were easy to sing.
I wanted songs that were worth remembering.
Because one day, those lyrics would become part of the soundtrack of their childhood.
And I began asking myself a question I had never really considered before:
If my children memorize this song, what will they actually learn about God?
As a former worship leader, I spent years thinking about worship from a church perspective.
As a mom, I’ve started thinking about it differently.
Not just:
“Is this a good song?”
But:
“Is this helping my children know who God is?”
Not Every Worship Song Teaches the Same Thing
Some worship songs focus on God’s faithfulness.
Some celebrate His holiness.
Others remind us of His love, His power, or His nearness.
That’s one of the beautiful things about worship.
Each song helps us see another part of God’s character.
As parents, we have an opportunity to intentionally choose songs that repeatedly place those truths before our children.
Not because music replaces Scripture.
But because music helps Scripture stay with us.
Why My Children Each Have “Their Song”
Before each of my children was born, I prayed and asked the Lord to give me a song to sing over them.
For my son, it became Always Forever by Phil Wickham.
I wanted him to grow up hearing about God’s constant love and faithfulness.
For my daughter, it became Champion by Bethel Music.
Every time she sings, “You are my Champion,” I’m reminded that she’s learning something about who God is—even if she can’t fully explain it yet.
Those songs weren’t chosen randomly.
They were chosen prayerfully.

Four Things I Listen For When Choosing Worship Songs
1. Do the lyrics tell me something true about God?
I want songs that help my children know His character.
Is He faithful?
Near?
Holy?
Loving?
Merciful?
The lyrics should answer those questions.
2. Are the words rooted in Scripture?
The best worship songs don’t simply make us feel something.
They remind us of what is true.
3. Could my child understand this one day?
Children don’t understand every lyric immediately.
But one day they will.
I want those words waiting for them.
4. Is this a song I still want them singing ten years from now?
Trends change.
God’s truth doesn’t.
I ask myself:
“Would I still be grateful they knew these lyrics when they’re teenagers?”
If the answer is yes, it’s probably a song worth singing.

Worship Is More Than Background Music
Music has a way of staying with us.
Years after we’ve forgotten conversations, we can still remember lyrics.
That’s why I don’t think choosing worship songs for our children is a small decision.
It’s an opportunity.
An opportunity to fill our homes with songs that remind us who God is.
Songs that our children may still be singing long after they’ve grown up.
And what a gift it would be if those songs continued pointing their hearts toward Jesus.
